What’s Special

Shanghai has turned itself into an international economic, finance, trade and shipping center, and an international center for technological innovation has taken form.

Shanghai is China’s most international hub, with

  • a total of 65 overseas news agencies
  • 771 regional headquarters of multinational enterprises
  • 481 foreign-invested R&D centers

Credited as the most attractive Chinese city for foreign professionals, Shanghai not only attracted the highest number of overseas professionals, but also the highest calibre, issuing some 260,000 work permits to expatriates, 18% of whom were high-end professionals.

With the world’s largest Metro network, Shanghai is a world-renowned cultural metropolis and international travel destination, boasting 149 museums and 23 public libraries. It has a complete education system, with 63 higher-education institutions by the end of 2020.

Shanghai has pushed forward the construction of a scientific and innovative center by initiating a “Shanghai Plan” to

  • establish a highland gathering the industries of integrated circuitry, artificial intelligence and biomedicine;
  • develop a smart city and digital economy;
  • speed up building of the platform of innovation and industrialization of scientific results;
  • invest more effort into key scientific projects;
  • improve its capacity to drive more innovation.
