As a prestigious member of the national “211 Project”, Shanghai University (SHU) is a comprehensive research university in Shanghai.

It is one of the first pilot universities in Shanghai for developing as a high-level university. It is also on the list of World-class Universities and First-class Disciplines (abbreviated as “Double First-class”), with support from the Chinese government for further development.

After continuous development for 100 years, SHU has been highly recognised for its academic excellence in teaching and research as well as its strength in management and campus facilities.

International Development of SHU

SHU is actively engaged in international cooperation and exchange, playing a leading role in Sino-Foreign collaboration in running schools.

So far, SHU has established partnerships with 249 universities and organisations in 54 countries and regions. The university has established four joint institutions through Sino-Foreign cooperation, as well as five Confucius Institutes with partners in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Currently, it is home to 3,301 international students from 153 countries and regions worldwide, including 2,229 international students on various degree programmes.

SHU is recognised for its innovative approach to international education. Recognised by the Ministry of Education in China, it is a demonstration base for international student education and the base for innovative practice for developing high-level international talents.

Academic Strength

SHU has established a comprehensive disciplinary system, covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, arts and other interdisciplinary subjects. Seven disciplines at SHU have entered the top 1% of the world in ESI.

It is an important base for talent development in Shanghai. It is also one of the key universities for the following national projects:

  • Scheme for the Development of Outstanding Engineers
  • Scheme 2.0 for the Development of Outstanding Talents in Media and Journalism

The University is recognised for it’s innovative model for talent development, including a unique credit system, system for course selection and the short-term system.

HLJU provides students with a good environment for teaching and learning, with excellent facilities and equipment of 582 million Yuan and a well-established library with more than 4200,000 books and journals. It also has a university town, which can accommodate over 30,000 students with sports facilities, canteens and restaurants.
